Self-check allows you to check out your books quickly using a self-check station in the library. You simply scan your library card, place your books on the check-out station, and your done.
The self-check system uses Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology. A small chip in each book has the book’s identification number. When you place your book on the self-check station, it reads the number of the book from the RFID chip and checks the book out to your library card.
It’s fast. You can check out a book and be ready to go in less than 30 seconds.
It’s easy. Just scan your library card, place your books on the checkout pad, and you’re done. You can even check out more than one book at a time; put a stack of books on the checkout pad, and they are all checked out in seconds.
It’s convenient. No more waiting in line to check-out books. And it’s private; only you see what you’re borrowing.
Use the Account button to check your library account, including the books you have checked out. You can even print a list of all the books checked out to your library card.
Use the Renew button to renew books checked out to your library card, even if you don’t have the book with you.
Yes. No information about you or the books you check out is saved on the chip in each book. The only data on the chip is the same number that’s on the barcode label we’ve always used to check out books.
No. Self-check will free the library staff to provide new and better services, such as helping you find the books you want, providing classes on using the library to enrich your life, and reaching out into the community to bring the library to preschool children, students in schools, and older adults unable to visit the library.
No problem. You can still bring your books to the desk to be checked out, just as you’ve always done. The choice is yours.

Free library accounts automatically created for all Iredell County students enrolled in public or charter schools.
No fines or late fees! Students are solely responsible for lost or damaged items.
Nothing. Students and teachers in any public or charter school in Iredell County automatically have StudentAccess accounts they can use through their student ID numbers
Use your student ID number for the barcode and the last four digits of the student ID number as your PIN.
You can only have ten print or audio library items checked out on these accounts at any one time. Also, your can't request items from NC Cardinal libraries via resource sharing.
Students can access eBooks and eAudiobooks through Overdrive, magazines through Zinio, as well as online resources including Learning Express, NCLive, Pronunciator, and much more.
Four weeks. All check out policies will be the same on these accounts as they would be on regular ICPL cards.
Yes. The student ID number and pin will log them into library computers just as a regular library card can.
Yes. Students can log in via the ICPL website with their student ID number and pin to view the items checked out on their account, as well as to renew or request items.
No. Even though the items on the account will appear overdue, no fines should be accumulating on the account. However, if an item is lost or damaged the cost of the item will be attached to the student's account barring them from use until the item is returned or the cost is paid.
Fifty-six. Students will be permitted to renew items up to two times, as usual, then after the due date of the final renewal students will have 56 days to return the item before it gets marked as lost.
Yes. The two accounts are not connected and in no way affect one another.
Yes. A parent or guardian simply needs to complete an opt-out form and return it to their local library branch or school. Forms are available at either the library or their school.
