Week of September 1st, 2020

Posted on September 1, 2020 at 11:45 AM by Carole Dennis

Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. How are the first couple weeks of school going? Things are hectic right now, but the library is here to help you get through it.

This is our first official week of “Reaching Out with Ms. Shannon” virtual outreach. While I know it’s not easy, I think we are all slowly adapting to the new normal. We still have a lot going on here at the library! All of our staff are working hard to provide resources for parents, teachers, and caregivers to make life a little easier.

First and foremost, for those of you that may be new teachers or caregivers, I am Ms. Shannon Keaton. I work at the Iredell County Public Library in the Youth Services department. I have done storytime and outreach for almost 15 years now. Many of you I have known since I started doing outreach. I love children and storytime, dancing, singing, and all of the other fun things I'm able to do through my work at the library. I miss the face to face part of it so much.

In the meantime, I will be blogging for you once a week with ideas, literacy tips, new books that I love, library resources, and more. We will navigate through these next coming months together for the betterment of the children.

The library has been putting effort into supporting parents and educators with virtual programming as much as possible. One example of this is our new monthly video series, Early Literacy Tips with Shannon & Alexa. Alexa and I dive into ways to help young children get the most out of their learning, and I highly recommend giving it a watch.

When trying to figure out a name for my new virtual outreach, I wanted to find something that was catchy yet identifiable. It took some time but we finally came up with “Reaching Out with Ms. Shannon.”

What is your definition of outreach? What do you think outreach should entail? I’m sure there are many different answers. My agenda is to bridge the divide by communicating with teachers, parents and caregivers to create and promote our library’s services. I’m also here to help you virtually in any way that I can.

I want to start off by suggesting you take a look at this website from Demco. In the future I will be focusing on our own in-house resources, but this is a great starting place for getting acquainted with home learning, hygiene tips for children, educator and parent resources, mental health topics, and other very useful information for anyone struggling to find help or direction during these trying times.

And of course, what would a back to school post be without some recommended reading? I love both of the books pictured below, and I think your little ones would too. You can click the links in the titles to be taken directly to each book's entry in our catalog.

I like myself book cover                Mouse first day of school book cover
I Like Myself, by Karen Beaumont        Mouse's First Day of School, by Lauren Thompson

Contact me at shannon.keaton@co.iredell.nc.us to place a hold or request specific titles be included in future book dropoffs. Please also email me with any ideas or topics you would like to discuss in upcoming blogs.

And don't think I've forgotten about the little ones in your care! I have a special message for all of my outreach kiddos.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to have more great news and resources for you next month!

-Ms. Shannon
