9 Fairy Tale Retellings You Need to Watch This Weekend

“Once upon a time”—does that phrase bring up memories of fairy godmothers, royalty and good versus evil? Fairy tales are often told to children about fantastical people, creatures or lands. Since our Summer Reading theme this year is Imagine Your Story, we thought this would be the perfect time to let you know about our favorite stories—fairy tales reimagined and available for streaming via Netflix and Amazon Prime.

On Netflix:

1. Once Upon a Time (2011-2018)
This is a tv series that takes place in Storybrooke, Maine. A Queen’s evil curse has displaced all the characters from your classics fairy tales and has placed them in Maine. A hero is needed to break the curse and help the characters regain their memories and make it back to their magical world.

2. Cinderella Pop (2019)
This movie is a modern take on the Cinderella story, with her Dad marrying an evil stepmother, forcing Cíntia to move in with her aunt. She develops a passion for music and becomes DJ Cinderella. In her secret identity, she falls in love with a singer, who treats her like a princess.

3. Beauty & the Beast (2012-2016)
In this tv show series, a detective falls in love with an ex-soldier, who is supposed to be dead. The detective becomes close to the ex-soldier, who is hiding a secret about his true identity.

4. Mirror Mirror (2012)
This movie retells the story of the Snow White, adding dark twists, drama and more secrets than the Disney version you grew up watching. If you’re looking for a fairy tale with many twists and turns (but there’s still a happily ever after) then this is the fairytale for you.

5. Hook (1991)
This movie, starring Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, and Maggie Smith retells the story of Peter Pan, from the point of view where Peter is all grown up and living in the modern world. His children are captured by Captain Hook and, with the help of his old friend Tinkerbell, Peter saves the children and regains the role of Peter Pan in Neverland.

On Amazon Prime

1. The Brothers Grimm (2005)
This movie takes place in 1811 Germany, where the Brothers Grimm are known for their monster hunting skills but who are actually con-artists that take advantage of local legends. However, the Brothers do run into an actual fairy-tale curse requiring them actually be brave instead of using their usual tricks.

2. Grimm (2011-2017)
A detective learns about his family history and what it means to be of the Grimm bloodline. The Grimms are guardians between the human world and the magical world. This tv show is filled with drama and the fighting of supernatural forces and perfect to get you into a fantastical mood.
