Writers' Group

The Troutman Writer's Group will resume their regularly scheduled meetings at 6:00 PM on the first Wednesday of each month beginning September 5th.
The Troutman Writers Group is open to anyone who is interested in developing writing skills and sharing samples of their writing for group critique. The writing forms may include short stories, poetry, nonfiction, memoir, developing novels, or any other written material. Writing prompts are sometimes given to the group for spontaneous writing exercises and immediate feedback. Checking grammar and spelling are not objectives of the group's effort. Style, plot, setting, flow, logic, theme, and use of words are among the elements we look for and attempt to improve.

The group is more appropriate for adults due to the freedom of the writers to explore any topic without constraints of appropriate age groups. While we attempt to find the best elements of the group members' writings and celebrate them, we also believe that members should be “thick skinned” enough to accept constructive criticism in good spirit and understand that the criticism may be of great help in developing writing skills.

New members are welcome regardless of writing experience. We encourage both new and continuing members to bring samples of their writing to our meetings.

Les M. Brown and Joyce C. Brown are the groups organizers. Joyce has taught English, including Creative Writing for forty years at Gardner-Webb University. Les is a retired professor of Biology and Geology at Gardner-Webb. He and Joyce have attended numerous writing workshops led by noted writers. Both have published both scholarly and creative works, mostly in the areas of Appalachian studies. Les is currently President of the Appalachian Writers Association.

About the library

The J. Hoyt Hayes Memorial Troutman Branch Library is a cooperative effort between the Town of Troutman and the Iredell County Public Library. Citizens for the Troutman Library, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, was incorporated in the fall of 2004 to raise funds for a library building in Troutman. The group raised over $700,000 for the library. Construction of the library began in 2009 and the library opened to the public in May 2010.
