Statesville Main Library

The New Iredell County Public Library opened its doors to the public on April 11, 2005. The new library is located in downtown Statesville in a complex of county buildings that includes the Hall of Justice, Register of Deeds, and Board of Elections.

Planning for the new library began in 2001 and groundbreaking was in August 2003. Iredell County provided 80% of the funding for the new library, with the City of Statesville providing 15% and the balance from donations. An anonymous donor donated $200,000 and Statesville Brick donated all bricks for the building at an estimated cost of $50,000. The Iredell Friends of the Library raised $80,000 through a fundraising campaign to but books and other items for the new library.

The new library has 54,000 square feet on three levels. It is three time larger than the previous library. The building is brick construction with a pitched seamless metal roof for low maintenance costs. No air conditioning equipment, ducts or pipes go through the roof, thereby minimizing the risk of leaks. All mechanical systems are located on the lower level and ducted through the walls.

The public enters the library on the Main Level. On the left as you enter are two Public Meeting Rooms. Each room can seat 50 people; the rooms can be combined to seat 100. The Circulation Desk is to the right of the entrance.

An Information Desk is located to the on the left next to a large Reading Area with comfortable seating for readers to relax. The Adult Fiction has space for 79,000 books. There is also an expanded area for 32,000 Movies and CD’s. Stairs and an elevator provide access to the upper and lower levels.

The Upper Level features 48 computers for public use. The local history room has greatly expanded space for resources in local history and genealogy, including digital imaging of historic records. The Non-Fiction area has room for 90,000 books. A distinctive feature is the atrium that runs the length of the building with high clearstory windows to provide indirect natural light. A conference room is available for small meetings and student group study.

The Lower Level is dedicated to children and teens, including twenty-four computers for use by young people and a special program room for story times and other children’s activities. The Preschool, Elementary and Young Adult area has space for 66,000 books, videos and audios. One unique feature in the Children’s Area is over 200 self-portrait tiles created by children in Iredell County. The tiles were sold by the Friends of the Library as part of their fund raising campaign
